_____________________________ APARTMENTS

Notice of change of rules to include a

SMOKING POLICY

Beginning                                     , 20_____, buildings ____ and _____ will be smoke-free. This includes inside the apartments as well as all outdoor patios, balconies, doorways, walkways, breezeways, and grassy areas within 10 feet of the buildings.

Why have smoke-free buildings?

As provided under the federal Fair Housing Act, and as permitted in our lease, we are making this change in our policy to provide an accommodation for health problems of non-smoking residents.

Tobacco smoke travels from its point of generation in a building to all other areas of the building. The smoke moves through shared ventilation systems, electrical and plumbing systems, ceiling crawl spaces, and has been shown to enter an apartment from an open window, and around closed windows and doors. It travels down hallways and through stairwells.

Tobacco smoke has been acknowledged as a health risk for more than 10 years. Smoke from the burning end of a cigarette contains over 4,000 chemicals, more than 35 are known to cause cancer. Some of these chemicals include formaldehyde, cyanide, carbon monoxide, methane and benzene.

Tobacco smoke is a direct cause of lung cancer, nasal sinus cancer, heart disease, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

People with chronic illnesses are especially vulnerable to tobacco smoke since it aggravates and increases the symptoms of their illnesses. Children who breathe tobacco smoke are more likely to suffer from pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma and ear infections.

Air filtration systems do not remove the chemicals from tobacco smoke and therefore are not effective in preventing the smoke from harming other residents.
