6/29/13 Push for smoke-free apartments ArgusLeader.com Cigarettes and smoking were blamed for more than half the structure fires last year in Sioux Falls, and city officials now are encouraging rental property owners to ban smoking in their buildings.
12/23/11 (Link no longer works) Police say cigarette cause of fatal house fire in Watertown KSFY TV The caller reported that a female was removed from the residence and was unresponsive. Watertown Fire Rescue responded and transported the victim to Prairie Lakes Hospital where she was declared dead, due to smoke inhalation. The victim was identified as Valerie Voelsch, 48. Investigators determined the likely cause of the fire was a lit cigarette on a piece of furniture within the home.
