night, on July 12, the San Francisco Housing
Commission voted unanimously to adopt a smoke-free
housing policy for all new public housing tenants.
While Housing Authority staff
recommended waiting to do additional vetting of the
policy with tenants, Housing Commissioner Ahsha
Safai, who referred to tenants' exposure to drifting
second hand smoke into their homes as a public
health emergency, was adamant that the Commission
adopt the policy last night and that the new policy
be included in the annual Public Housing Authority
Plan which the Commission adopted yesterday.
Commissioners voted unanimously to do so and the
Housing Authority staff will be coming back to the
Commission after doing additional vetting to report
on their implementation plan.
